I finished a wearable muslin of Jane the other day. I planned to use it as a nightgown from the beginning; that’s why I put some care into properly hemming it and finishing the seams.
The underarm gussets are very large, so I don’t know if it’s representative of how the design is supposed to look. (Also, I overlooked the instructions for hemming the neckline and used a pretty wide bias binding instead. And yes, I learned a thing or two about bias binding in the process, and the lacing ended up being asymmetrical.) I’m happy with how it turned out anyway!
I found the fabric – an old duvet cover with a broken zipper – in a giveaway box on the streets. (That’s a customary thing in my area; people just put boxes with more or less still-usable stuff out on the sidewalk with a note saying “for free”.) I suspect the fabric is 100% cotton (based on how it feels and how it handled ironing at maximum heat). It was a bear to cut straight lines, not just because I’ve often found that old bedding fabric warps a bit over time, but also because of the ever-so-slightly diagonal lines of the design.
That said, I enjoyed sewing the pattern a lot; it’s a simple but effective one and I can see myself using it for a summer dress next year (and possibly for further historybounding shenanigans).
