Would measuring my clothing be a good idea to get measurements?

I don’t exactly trust to measure myself, BUT, I own a lot of garments I like the fit of (specifically, pair of sweatpants, a turtleneck, a t shirt and some boyshort style underwear). Would it be easier to take those measurements, add 1-3CM (depending on fabric thickness) to account for fabric itself and because I like stuff looser fitting, than to fully measure myself? I especially plan to do this on a pair of underwear so I can try out making a Bruce, especially because of how my body is shaped (i have a very outward stomach to account for) and it’d be awkward to measure on my own

Makes sense if not, I plan to at some point get a measurement set from a tailor, but for now, would that work? :DD

No, but also, yes. Allow me to clarify:

Measuring clothes (and adding or subtracting a bit) is not a great way to get your measurements. If you feed those into FreeSewing and use the results as-is, you are almost certainly going to get disappointing results.

That being said, measuring garments you love is an excellent way to size similar garments.

For example: if you’re thinking about making Bruce, and you have a similar pair of boxer briefs, you can totally get to work.

What you want to do is:

  • measure the garment in some key locations (also include vertical measurements)
  • plug in some measurements and keep tweaking them until the resulting pattern matches the dimensions of the garment you started from.

To figure out the actual size of the pattern, you want to turn on paperless mode:

In conclusion:

  • as an iterative process where you tweak the measurements until the pattern matches the garment, this is a solid approach
  • as a way to one-shot your measurements based on a garment, this won’t end well

I’d say go for it. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you run into questions.

I forgot to mention: If you really have no idea about measurements, I would suggest picking one if our curated measurements sets, this way you have at least realistic proportions to start from.

(As using nonsensical measurements will yield nonsensical results)

Thanks! I do have an idea about measurements themselves, but the issue comes about actually getting them (as I’m both a bit of a funny bodyshape, very rectangle and short, and because of where my bodyfat sits if I lift like, my arm to measure my bicep easily, that’ll be a bit different of a measurement), I’ll probably use them for now as at least rough measurements, and if it ends up a little loose, thats usually ideal for me anyways, clothing I’d mostly be referencing are more skin snug items (like the turtleneck and I have a pair of jeans that fit pretty snug while being comfortable, excluding T shirt because I’m unholy picky about t shirt fit on me… yay ASD)

My rambling aside, I’ll take whatcha said into account, and see about those measurements sets
