Woolen Simon shirt as an overshirt/light jacket

In a store with a terrific stock of old fabrics from the 1940s to 1960s, I stocked up on wool remnants. The small scraps were a lot cheaper than buying the fabric by the meter. That’s why this example is made from three different fabrics: Scottish tweed and two English coat fabrics in black and grey.

The bag is threefold: 1 inside pocket with zipper, 1 open patch pocket on the outside and another one with flap on top. Maybe that’s why I had to make three attempts before I finally managed to sew the piece together properly .

I made the cut a little wider so that there was enough room for clothes worn underneath. I found it difficult to make the flat felled seams with the relatively thick wool fabric, especially as the wool can hardly be ironed (for example I had to cheat a little under the sleeve slit). Riveting the press studs through the rather thick button placket and the cuff was also not easy.

Great idea and choice of fabric/colours!

That looks amazing! I was hoping to make a jeans jacket sometime in the future, and didn’t think any of Freesewing’s designs lent themselves to that undertaking… But on second thought, why not use Simon for it?

Superb fabric. Why not sharing the shop address?

Yes, of course. Barbara and her store “Fichu” took over the goods from a guy in Berlin and is now located in Biel (Switzerland). More about the remarkable story here or here (> Presse Artikel) or e.g. in this older article.
