Need help with carlita coats lacking documentation

hey, to start off, i’m no expert, i’m just a cosplayer with big ambitions, not a lot of time and a need for a bit of a guideline on how to proceed.
i already got the pattern printed and the main fabric pieces cut out but i’ve never done something this complex and if anyone’s here who’s sewn the carlita or carlton coat i would greatly appreciate a bit of assistance because i’m still kind of a beginner with sewing and the documentation on carlita is very incomplete!!

like for example i’d love to know what the instructions mean with drafting pieces from existing pieces. does this refer to the existing pattern pieces or the existing pieces i had already cut out? i’m also kind of struggling how to piece it all together given that i’ve never sewn a coat and all, i’m a little afraid of messing a step up too!! i even bought a tailoring doll in my measurements (overdue for other projects as well so worth it) so i could pin the pieces on in hopes of visualising it better…

note: im gonna skip out on a lot of the interfacing fabric because i need the coat to be light and not actually keeping me for the winter (it would kill me in the late summer convention i will be attending) but i do need to reinforce some of the important bits like shoulders, upper torso and back, right?

thanks in advance! :cherry_blossom:

I haven’t done Carlita but I will just give you few insights to keep the topic going

“Some parts for Carlita require you to draft parts from the existing parts”
for example front facing

front facing is the inside part of coat or jacket and has the same geometry as part of the front body. In Carlita instructions it is not drawn as separate piece but marked with a line:

(I painted it green)

lining is a thing that makes a coat or jacket warmer. Summer jackets are often unlined or partialy lined, as lining has also other functions: protect the cloth, hides the inner construction, makes it easier to slide on/off …

interfacing has mainly a function of keeping the shape of cloth. Especially the role of canvas is dramatic. Coat without a canvas will behave very differently than a coat without. Not necessary bad, but you need to be ready  Imagine a prince on the military parade vs inspector Columbo.

If you go for a light variant use a fusible interfacings on the front facing and collar and think how you will finish the seams.

all of this is very good to know!! i suspected the facing would be that bit on the inside before the lining but i wasn’t sure, so i was worried about how to proceed.
also yes, i did consider the look will be drastically different without interfacing and i do want it to be quite fluid and dynamic, so partially interfacing or only lightly interfacing it will probably be my best option ^^

thank you for the help!!

Instructions for Jaeger might help you with the order of construction, as it is a similar style of construction.
There are also a couple of threads over on the Discord server that have discussed this there in the past:

Discord (this is a particularly long thread)

much appreciated! i didn’t know there was a discord, ahaha
edit: i can’t find the normal invite to the server so i cant open the threads ;_;
edit 2: figured it out >:) i cannot be stopped
