My accidental non-gender-conforming tank top

So, I’m new at this. One of the first things I did a year ago, when I first started sewing, was download a free pattern of a tank top. I figured, What could be easier than a tank top?, not knowing the difference between sewing knits & wovens :squinting_face_with_tongue:. The first garment I made with that pattern was a tragedy.

So I decided to try again, what with a year of experience under my belt, including a couple of successful FreeSewing Bruce and Umbra knit undies. And it came out… pretty well!

The frilly bottom hem was not intentional (but it’s growing on me). I tried sewing a rolled hem (I’ve recently started experimenting with different presser feet) because I ran out of fabric and made this tank top shorter than it should’ve been. So a few millimeters for a hem rather than a whole inch seemed like a win! I figured a knit fabric wasn’t ideal for this kind of hem, but the shirt cost me $6 to make so I figured what the hell. So this is what I got. I think the frilly hem (is there a name for that?) looks fine.

The tank top pattern is the Arrowsmith Tank Top by Thread Theory. It’s freely downloadable and has detailed instructions. I hadn’t discovered FreeSewing yet. The neckline is rounder than the Aaron pattern here. I’ll probably make an Aaron someday just to see the difference. Or maybe the new Toni.

(I seem to be having problems uploading photos, so I’ll try that as a reply.)

Here are the photos:

The photo uploading problem was entirely my fault. I had my browser open to FreeSewing on both my laptop & my tablet, and the browser synchronizes between devices, so I think the browser & the website got confused!

It looks like a lovely lettuce hem finish. Often when we make mistakes we have actually learnt a new skill that we weren’t aware of before we sat down at the sewing machine! The top looks great and it sounds like it was a huge improvement on your first attempt.

Ah, thanks for the info and the kind words. Now I can show off my lettuce hem.

Maybe someday I’ll make a post about all the things I did wrong on the first version :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: . And a thing or two I attempted to fix. It could be helpful to knit noobs like me.
