Migration: Loose ends

The migration to Europe is still imperfect:

  • On the frontpage under Getting started still FreeSewing.org is named (that’s easy to repair).
  • Pictures on the showcase pages are stored at imagedelivery.net, a daughter company of US-based big player Cloudflare.
  • The main part of online communications does not take place at freesewing.eu or another European open source service, but at Discord, a US-based closed source service.

Please fix these issues even if it might not be trivial.

People continue to use Discord because we like it. It’s not as if other alternatives are not available.

Thank you for keeping our todo list fresh.

I feel compelled to point out that the Freesewing Discord server is a community effort, and not part of what we consider official FreeSewing infrastructure (like this forum is).

It is comparable to FreeSewing being present on Facebook, Reddit, and so on.

As such, there is nothing to fix because we are not in the business of telling people what to do, or where to congregate.

That being said, if you would like to start an alternative that would give people more choices on places to connect with our community, you have my full support to do so.

The image hosting is in our todo list. It is considered lower priority because all the hosted information is public. So there is no private user data hosted there.

At the end of the day, it’s all about priorities. We are currently preparing the 4.5 release which will have some important (umder the hood) changes.

There is unlikely ti be any movement in these matters until that get done. Thank you for practicing patience in the meantime.

Time for on update on this thread regarding the loose ends that were mentioned by @user-151047

On the frontpage under Getting started still FreeSewing.org is named

We have fixed that.

Pictures on the showcase pages are stored at imagedelivery.net, a daughter company of US-based big player Cloudflare.

We have migrated our image hosting. We now host them ourselves, either directly on static.freesewing.eu or behind Bunny CDN (a EU company) at cdn.freesewing.eu, depending on the type of image.

The main part of online communications does not take place at freesewing.eu or another European open source service, but at Discord, a US-based closed source service.

As we’ve already discussed, this is out of scope within the context of our migration, but I wanted to give an update nevertheless:

Given the recent moves regarding age verification on the Discord platform, there’s been discussion to run our own Matrix instance. It’s not currently being worked on, but we’re actively trying to figure out whether that would make sense.

Even then, that won’t mean we will close the Discord instance because of the reasons outlined above, but I still think it was worth mentioning.

The migration to Europe is still imperfect

I don’t want to use the word perfect, but the migration is completed.

Thank you for your patience, as it did indeed take some time.

The big migration subjects are done (thx for this!), but some janitoring has not been finished yet.

For example take a look at XL Octoplushy by lasermonkey12 | FreeSewing

One image (the first one) has been moved to cdn.freesewing.eu, but the other five images are still hosted at imagedelivery.net. And this situation repeats on every page with more than one image …
