I can talk a bit about these things:

There’s also this:

Hoi Joost.

Ik ben Rene Houben en ik organiseer op 21 november a.s. in de LocHal in Tilburg de 7e editie van het Open Source Event.
Info vorig jaar: Open Source Event 2025 | LocHal.

Graag wil ik je uitnodigen om ook deel te nemen;

Ah, and authors for showcases and blog posts. As well as migrating the pictures.

April 25, 2026 Community Call

Notes:

  • Personal measurements comparison:
    • Sherd is working on a site that compare personal measurements to a population.
      • To give a better idea about how a garment will fit.
      • To help with store-bought paper pattern sizing. Example: to know which Simplicity pattern size will fit best.
      • To help sewists transition from store-bought paper patterns to parameter patterns.
      • To take gender out of clothing patterns.
    • Curvalicia was working on a similar Principle components analysis.
      • Waiting to get data from FreeSewing users who have granted permission.
      • To have a better idea about body types and relationships between measurements for body types.
    • Joost: FreeSewing has had different approaches to customers without personal measurements.
      • We first had standard sizes, S-M-L-XL-etc. But, we got rid of it because of problems where “Medium” isn’t the same for all garments/people
      • We also had a measurements comparison graph, to call out possible outlier measurements that don’t match average measurements.
      • We now have curated sets, actual measurements for actual people. But, we haven’t gotten many volunteers for measurements and photos.
      • We also now have a generated croquis drawing based on measurements. Helps but is not perfect.
      • So, a purely technical solution might not be possible.
  • The goal of making garment-sewing accessible to the widest possible audience. To eliminate obstructions.
  • Technical solutions to 2d geometry to 3d shapes.
    • There is a “topology” branch of math that can translate topology into shapes. Like flat patterns into garments.
    • It gets tricky when taking fabric drape and undergarment effects into consideration.
    • Technologies exist today but are not perfect.
    • If fabric is considered a surface, things can work better.
    • Currently there are limits to mathmatical transforms when it comes to real-world garments.
  • Welcome, nickjames.
  • The Discord event for this community call was 1 hour off. Daylight Savings/Summer Time side effects. The issue should now been fixed.
  • Can the FreeSewing schema for measurements and curated sets be cleaned up? There are discrepancies currently. Sherd can send a proposal to fix.
