November 22, 2025 Community Call

Notes:

  • Cold weather. What constitutes “cold” weather?
  • Website migration.
    • We previously migrated website to the backend server to deal with our increased traffic.
    • We found a new host to hopefully resolve future financial and technical issues.
    • FreeSewing migrated to statichost.eu today. The transition should fully finalize over the next day or so.
  • Library of Parts.
    • Functionality was previously added to allow mixing and matching parts from different designs.
    • But there were problems with the implementation and multiple workarounds were needed.
    • A new “Library of Parts” will be implemented were where parts are specifically designed and designated to be used in the mix-and-match way.
    • So, the Bent design will be deprecated because Bent was just Brian’s torso with the 2-part long sleeve. Instead, there will just be torso and sleeve parts that can be mixed-and-matched.
    • What version to release this new Library of Parts functionality?
      • Theoretically, this is a major change so it could be released as 5.0.
      • However, it is not a breaking change that affects any designs. And, it would cause confusion. So, we will instead release it as 4.5.
    • How options will work? Options will be passed to Parts.
    • Parts made of other Parts? At the moment, the idea is “no”, each part should be standalone. But, we can consider changing this in the future, if appropriate.
  • How can we spread deployments & support among more people?
    • Because the website was on our backend server, Joost was the only person who could deploy the website and fix things like account problems.
    • With the migration to the new hosting site, this will change to allow support to be spread out to others.
    • We’ll need to determine which people will be able to do this and the processes.
      • Shared mailbox for group communication, to coordinate?
      • Permissions to modify/fix accounts.
      • A support team.
      • Especially for the support requests we get not from the forum or Discord. Received through email.
      • Are people perhaps feeling discouraged from using the forum and Discord because we don’t explicitly say that posts in different languages are welcome?
  • Are we okay financially? Yes, everything is fine now.
    • FreeSewing had 100K users last year, 300K users today. But, not as many measurements sets.
    • The recent problems were a temporary issue due to temporary viral social media popularity.
    • And, with the latest migration, we should be in good shape in the future.
  • Joost submitted a proposal to give a talk about FreeSewing at the 2026 FOSDEM conference.
  • Travel and knowledge of European geography.
    • Walking across Europe.
    • Mapping geography via cheese.
  • Next meeting December 6.
    • TBD if we’ll be skipping a FreeSewing meeting over the winter holidays, as usual. (Dec. 20 or Jan. 3)
