The call does not have a fixed structure or agenda items. Everyone is free to suggest agenda items, ask questions, or bring ideas.

October 11, 2025 Community Call

Notes:

  • FreeSewing has been too popular recently, causing problems.
    • Mostly due to being mentioned in an Instagram post.
    • Our hosting bill was 4,000 Euro last month, and we switched hosting to our backend host to try to lower costs.
    • Switched from a CDN to a single machine.
    • 20,000 new users, and the traffic is causing technical issues like slowdowns and non-responsive pages.
    • We were featured in another Instagram post, which caused the issue to occur again.
    • It’s not sustainable, if this is a long-term trend.
    • Can we help with the funding? Joost wants to wait and see if this is needed.
    • Technical fixes? Like having important things load at the end? Some caching was implemented. But, we’ll wait and see if tech changes are needed.
  • What’s our philosophical stance on possibly changing the FreeSewing Revenue Pledge (so that some of the money could be used for these costs)?
    • Inclination is to not change anything at this point.
    • The thought is that this is just a temporary popularity surge and temporary issue. Wait and see.
  • People in the Netherlands eat dinner early, apparently, at 5:00 pm.
  • Mastectomy prothesis cover pattern update:
    • Prototype adapted from a purchased pattern.
      • It basically works and was approved.
      • But, still has an apex pointiness issue. Bra-shaped, not breast-shaped.
    • Hemotoma causing new pattern shape issues.
      • The shape needs to be more tear-drop shaped and less sphere-shaped.
      • But, polyester fill tends to expands to a sphere shape.
    • Work on modifying other purchased bras.
  • Project updates:
    • Work continues on the FreeSewing pattern preview site. People appreciate it.
    • Trying to come up with a way to mark both stitchline and seamline on patterns.
  • Some new users and commenters on other sites think that FreeSewing patterns are made by AI.
    • And other myths. AI artwork. Patterns not tested.
    • Would a “not made by AI and other truths” blog post help?
      • Not to convince doubters, but just to have a citable source/reference and statement of facts. Could be used for rebuttals.
      • Ben will make a draft and bring it up at the next meeeting or on Discord or forum, for use as a possible newsletter article or blog post.
