I have just finish adjusting pattern for a devon jacket that I plan to use with a with and light blue/turquoise linen fabric. I’m wondering what color to use as top stitching. I know that orange and blue is ok but i’m wondering if there is a better color match possible.
Orange and turquoise is a classic complementary color combination according to the Ives color wheel which more closely matches how our eyes see things than the simplified one used for paint mixing. I think it will look great. Although I might go with a paler orange since the turquoise is a paler blue color. I am not great at topstitching so I always choose a matching color thread so my mistakes don’t jump out. When I get better, I hope to be braver.
Do you want your topstitching to ‘pop’ visually as a design element or do you mostly want it to blend in?
If you want it to pop, on that fabric, I would simply use white. The combination has plenty of contrast but only one hue, so not as loud as going across the color wheel. The blue is lovely and calming, and I wouldn’t want to detract from that.
Alternatively, there are various shades of brown that pair well with turquoise.
Mostly, though, use whatever you like!
I have made a selection and I will make samples to chose the one I like best. I was going for something contrastring
